There's no right way or wrong way on this scale. It's got to be somewhere in between. The issue is full autonomy in parenthood isn't really established if you have an underlying framework set by government to facilitate a par for what children should be like and if we take the stance that children aren't property of State, then we should necessarily compel full autonomy of parents. It's too bad there's countless examples I can think of that extend past parents' competence: what if the parents birthed a genius and they don't have aptitudes required to mold him to his potential? What about if the parents die and they don't have family that can meet minimum criteria? I don't really have a perfect answer for this and it's something I struggled with when reading The Republic. This, I suppose, is the essence of the ancients (and even less ancient) calling the mean *vulgar*. There's so much more to be said about this, but the sad reality is some of us have responsibility the others can't imagine and it truly does take genius to reconcile these complications. For the record, I like to think I usually "reasonably participate". I think too many of you were always confused about why I challenge you or inspire you in ways that I have. Maybe one day you can appreciate the kinds of things I was helping you with.
