I use my shelves to buy stuff (that we normally use) when it's on discount... I just have 3 rules:
It has to be something that we would normally use
It has to be shelf stable
It has to have minimum discount of 40%
That being said I of course have a bunch of staples like rice, pasta and canned meats, beans, fish, rice etc. which I hope to never have to use. Saves a fair amount of money in the long run and it's there if necessary.
