Here's a whole bunch of ideas and excuses on how to handle this.

Don't carry your phone anywhere.

Or, your smartphone doesn't work anymore after you dropped it, and you need a new one but can't afford it because of the lockdown.
My phone just ran out of power - I don't know why.
I forgot to charge the phone last night.
My girlfriend has my phone and I have hers, I don't know how that happened.
I ran over my phone this morning with the car.
I was drinking last night and lost my phone and haven't found it yet.

I was at a party and I left the phone there I guess.

There must have been a hole in my pocket yesterday.

OMFG, somebody stole my phone!

I can't afford a smartphone after I lost mine (or it was stolen) - will the government buy me a new Apple Iphone 12 to replace it?

I turned texting off because I was getting too much spam.

I only answer phone numbers that are in my address book.

Something was wrong with my display - I need a new phone.

Etc., etc., etc.
