Perhaps rape, hoaxed or otherwise, is just a tool for control. Maybe women know deep down that it is mostly something that happens to individuals who put themselves in risky situations. Maybe they can, in their heart of hearts, acknowledge that it's an unfortunate fact of life and nature that will always be there. When the horror of rape can be used to their benefit, they use it. When it's not to their benefit, it can be safely ignored.
