From what I read a while ago it's not actually as bad as it sounds:
The water is filtered from what you would normally call "radioactive waste", what remains is tritium water. Ie. water with a hydrogen atom with 2 neutrons (0 is normal, 1 is deuterium).
The half life is 12 years, the concentrations are extremely low and the beta radiation produced doesn't penetrate far. It cannot even penetrate a piece of paper.
Now obviously this assumes they DID actually filter the more nasty stuff. Otherwise yeah it would be bad if they are lying about that part.
Why not filter the tritium water? I'm not an expert, but chemically it would be just like water so it would be about as difficult as enriching uranium probably.
