Airlines, in their infinite mission to balance costs, profits, and keeping planes full of passengers alive between two points, might be going a little too far in their latest attempt to cut back.

According to CBS News, the industry has been quietly lobbing Congress to allow them to use just one pilot in the cockpit instead of two, as is currently required by part 121 of the Federal Aviation Regulations. . . .

You don't have to fly to be affected by this, plane crashes will become more common and with no one in control, the crash site could easily be a tall building, hospital, school, daycare, etc.. in a populated city or less likely a home in the middle of nowhere.

Pilots generally engage the autopilot systems after take-off, so assuming no mechanical or electrical faults occur during the cruise phase, the unnamed plane will reach the destination and circle until it runs out of fuel. Autopilot is not setup to land the plane as far as I'm aware, but some systems can assist with the landing process. (auto braking)

The best procedure following a safety change of this magnitude, would be training flight attendants on cockpit systems/controls to effectively carry out an assisted emergency landing.

ATC can generally get a pilot on frequency who can talk any regular joe (probably not a tyrone) into a successful landing. You have to know how to talk on the radio and get on the correct frequency. 121.5

I notice a trend with businesses going to a self service model. Already, I have to be a cashier at the grocery store. The way things are going, I may need to learn how to fly a fucking plane because airlines are too cheap to pay for 2 captains. Are you kidding about training stewardesses to land a plane? They're probably already thinking of how to eliminate them.

By the time they replace flight attendents the planes will be fully autonomous with remote intervention being an option in the event that the autopilot fails, maybe there will always be someone on board with basic flight knowledge in the event of total electrical failure, but the planes are all practically fly-by-wire anyway so total electrical failure is probably a death sentence.
