In a socialized system, good things don't always lead to good outcomes. Sometimes complying with the bullshit outperforms what otherwise makes sense.

Not everything can be self directed and not every child does well with that. But learning to be self directed is a huge skill and very beneficial in life. Also most interests can incorate many diffrent subjects.

Also owning their own learning could mean many things.

1) they help pick or have a say in the unit study/curriculum/ books they read.

2) it could just mean they pick where they are learning like the kitchen table/couch/outside

3) they get to have a say in the order the subjects are worked on or maybe what time of day they work on them

4) it could mean full on unschooling.

If they are homeschooled the parents make their diploma and will make sure the child is ready for the world so I can't imagine a parent not graduating their homeschooler.
