I read the book many years prior the series. I did enjoy the series for all it's faults and my disagreements with some premises. I do need to reread the source material.

If a family is willing to take care of their own 'eaters' I don't see a problem. It is however, a legitimate question to ask if the state should be responsible for care if the family is unwilling or unable.
