I read the book many years prior the series. I did enjoy the series for all it's faults and my disagreements with some premises. I do need to reread the source material.

If a family is willing to take care of their own 'eaters' I don't see a problem. It is however, a legitimate question to ask if the state should be responsible for care if the family is unwilling or unable.

At least the empire of Japan pulled out of the Western US. The only problem is that it's now run, in the show, by insurgent black gangs, sort of like real life inner cities.
