"When comedian and Goon Show member Peter Sellers died aged 54 in 1980, his final joke was to have "In The Mood," by Glenn Miller played at his funeral. This was a tune that his fellow Goons hated, and he knew they would have to sit in silence and listen to it.
The Goons consisted of Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe and Michael Bentine
A private funeral service was held at Golders Green Crematorium on 26 July, conducted by Sellers's old friend, Canon John Hester. Sellers's final joke was the playing of "In the Mood" by Glenn Miller, a tune which all the Goons hated; he knew they would have to sit there in silence and listen to it. A memorial service was held at St Martin-in-the-Fields on 8 September 1980—what would have been Sellers's 55th birthday. Close friend Lord Snowdon read the twenty-third Psalm, Harry Secombe sang "Bread of Heaven" and the eulogy was read by David Niven.
Spike Milligan was the last of the Goons to die, with Bentine passing in 1996 and Secombe in 2001
Even late in life, Milligan's black humour had not deserted him. After the death of Harry Secombe from cancer, he said, "I'm glad he died before me, because I didn't want him to sing at my funeral." He also wrote his own obituary, in which he stated repeatedly that he "wrote the Goon Show and died".
And in the end it was one of Milligan's fellow Goons who had the last laugh. At Sellers's funeral 22 years ago, Sir Harry sang a hymn and Milligan joked: "I hope you die before me because I don't want you singing at my funeral." But Sir Harry's son David announced in the church he had unearthed a recording of father singing Guide me, O thou great Redeemer - and it was played at the service."
