I was having this song in my brain with the "wrong words", but that is common with myself so nothing abnormal. I then searching for a link to it found it's about the fake him he's worked to perfect always in control of himself in his own way, then his other part is the child that got pushed into doing shit that shaped him to better and worse thinking to just keep life simple I assume and to get what he wanted also. Thing is as written that old him is still there and the current one also is what the song is about.

I definitely think the Nirvana version is much sweeter sounding than the original David Bowie version where Bowie's voice for once doesn't work so well compared to Cobaine's vocals.
