My guess is some of the hotter handgun loads like 9mm PBLE +P+, 125gr 357 magnum, 115gr .357 sig and others that are over 550 ft/lbs will give a little bit better psychological stop and will also do better job on medium game like dogs and racoons.

I agree with the experts that if you use a bullet that expands well and penetrates 12-18in in ballistics gel in 9mm, .40, .45 ACP that that should basically do the job the bottom of the article says you need.

I personally would prefer an expanding bullet from the larger handguns like 10mm, .357 magnum or .44 magnum not because the other calibers won't due, but because with a good bonded bullet those calibers have a better chance at braking large bones. If you hit a pelvis or femur, or if you shoot a bad guy sideways through the shoulders you will be better off with a 180-200gr 10mm or a 158gr .357 mag loading I think. But I don't think the difference is anything close to that of a rifle or shotgun. I think the author is a bit overly concerned with "shooting to stop". If I ever shoot someone I'll be hoping for a spine or brain hit ... Think of it this way let's say you're in a pistol fight and you shoot the bad guy three times in the chest putting three expanded Corbon DPX through his heart and lungs ... did you drive those sharp six-petal bullets through his circulatory system to just 'stop' him? Haha nope. If I ever shoot someone butchering anyone else's children, or trying to kill me, I hope they die.

Other than that, interesting article

I've found that a head shot always does the job. No cannon needed.
