Now do ammo. I was reading that the american public (several years old number) had over 1 TRILLION rounds of ammo in civilian hands to go along with that 400+ million guns.

Would only take 2,500 per gun owner on average. That doesn't seem too unreasonable.

Guess that is why it is an old number. After the BS people have been going through for the last few years I would expect that most gun owners have at least 1k of any time of round they use.
