When I lived in the city I had 9 shot bird rounds for that reason

Never use birdshot for self defence. People can take a chest of bird shot and live. NSFW (pic8.co)

The guy was hit from a real far distance. Number 9 birdshot at 10 yards is going to leave a massive path of destruction. The odds of survival are minimal.

Multiple stories of close range bird shots surviving. Also in that pic look at the spread 10 yards and under.

Well, there is just no way that is possible at 10 yards and under even with cylinder bore all the pellets are within an inch or two. If you don't believe me, you need to go to your local range and shoot a patterning board.

I have been watching some videos on birdshot spread and I think we are both a little off as I told another commenter. It looks like this range is about 50 ft which is about 17 yd. My thought process on using birdshot for home defense was for inside the house fighting where I don't want the over penetration of buckshot. Any unobstructed shot inside your house with number 9 birdshot will be lethal.

Average spread is 1 inch per yard. Someone else said 10 yards, I would guess between that and 15 yards.

That one inch per yard thing is not accurate at all. It depends on a lot of factors. What kind of shot you're using and how you are choked. I have shot pattern boards before and I can tell you that was a long distance shot. When I shot the piece of fire wood the other day from about 10 yards or so all of the pellets hit within about an inch of each other and I have no choke at all. Cylinder bore.

So I've done a little more studying and I think we're both a little off. It looks to me like that spread is about 50 ft based on some videos I saw with birdshot. Buckshot would make him much tighter group. My idea of using birdshot was for fighting inside the house and my logic is that I will not over penetrate walls but anything inside the house number 9 birdshot should be lethal.
