Multiple stories of close range bird shots surviving. Also in that pic look at the spread 10 yards and under.

Well, there is just no way that is possible at 10 yards and under even with cylinder bore all the pellets are within an inch or two. If you don't believe me, you need to go to your local range and shoot a patterning board.

I have been watching some videos on birdshot spread and I think we are both a little off as I told another commenter. It looks like this range is about 50 ft which is about 17 yd. My thought process on using birdshot for home defense was for inside the house fighting where I don't want the over penetration of buckshot. Any unobstructed shot inside your house with number 9 birdshot will be lethal.
