I'm interested in a .45 ACP pistol, but there are so many out there.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I recommend something that you pick up off the table and it fits perfectly in your hand without having to fumble or adjust your grip angle. For me CZ/FN/1911 are the sweet spot. Pistols you can modify quite a bit but you are stuck with that lower and grip angle. Go to the gun store and ask to handle some different makes and without thinking pick it up and bring the sights to your eyeline, if you have any trouble try the next.

I've had the opportunity to put about 50 rounds through a 1911, and I really enjoyed it. It's what I'm leaning towards right now.

Can't go wrong with the classics, a ton of aftermarket but If you can try a I love that thing so much.

Czech made? I've heard good things about CZ firearms. I'll have to take a look at it.

Thanks!

Either a 1911 or the FN FNX-45 are on my to buy list. The FNX is boss for the large capacity, holding 15 rounds of 45 ACP is huge vs the usual 10 round capacity in the 45 ACP world.

If it is your first gun though, I'd always suggest a 9mm, a lot easier to develop bad habits with a larger caliper, mainly flinching. I don't care how much a man you are but flinching is a consistent problem with new shooters (had the same issue myself).

I've owned rifles thus far, but this will be my first handgun. I've fired a number of pistols, mostly revolvers, in a number of calibers; I've liked .45 ACP the most so far. That's a good point about developing habits, though.

Does the FN FNX-45 have a variable pressure trigger? That is, does it only fire if you pull back on the trigger quickly? That's a feature that I don't really enjoy.

Nope, I got the FNX-45 tactical. Clean trigger break with a short crisp reset. They do come with a metric ass-tonne of packing grease pumped into every crevice so I would do a full tare-down and clean because before that the trigger feels a little gritty and mushy. I took mine apart all the way and gave it a legit 1 hour cleansing/ lube and when I shot it for the first time is was oozing out brown packing grease out of the slide release and decocker after one mag. Seems like Sig/CZ/FN all apply bucket of packing grease at the factory.

Glocks are close to 100% reliable. I've owned several and have had zero issues over 25+ years. I've had and shot almost all of Glock's calibers but really prefer .45ACP. If you are going to conceal carry, I recommend you look at the Glock 36 or 30SF. My EDC has been a G36 for many years.

If you want an excellent nightstand personal protection pistol and range ammo eater, the a Glock 21SF would be a great choice.

I've owned several 1911's and think highly of them but when it comes to "trust and confidence", Glock is my choice.

Interesting... I've heard disparaging things about Glocks before, but I know they've got to be reliable considering their widespread use.

I'll have a look. Thanks!

Yeah do that.... I live in the country and hate shooting ranges, the amount of times somebody has muzzle swept me is beyond count. Try before buy if at all possible.

I have repeated that a million times. I even have to inspect barrels from the feed ramp side when field stripped from being so conditioned by my grandfathers and father to use proper muzzle/trigger discipline and not shoot yourself or others in the face

Good idea; this will be my first time purchasing a brand new firearm, I didn't consider the rental option to figure out what I like to fire.
