I'm mulling over putting an optic on one of my ARs for target shooting. I rarely use it for over 25 meters since it's my "quick trip to the indoor range within walking distance" rifle.

It has irons on it currently, which is fine for hitting the target at such close range. The trouble is I cant readily SEE holes in paper past 20 meters, so putting a red dot on it would still leave me with Schrodinger's Target.

Any suggestions on a magnified optic that's appropriate for such short range? Maybe a LVPO that I've heard of but know eff all about?

Honestly I'd go with an acog, no battery, rugged, proven.

LPVOs are good but probably overkill at the ranges you speak of.

Grab an inexpensive holosun 403a.

Yes chinese... but fucking amazing at its price point.

You can buy better optics like an eotech or acog or leupold. but for what you are doing... Why would you?

That is a consideration I had. Just because I can afford pricey optics doesnt mean I should pick an optic that cost more than the rifle.

Re-reading the post. Seems I recommended a red dot... Sorry sir.

Getting into magnification. You got red dot with magnifier, holo with magnifier combo, ACOG, or Scope from my experience.

A simple Vortex Crossfire should get you into a reasonable scope under 150 with 2-7 magnification. But with the laundry list of conditions you noted in another post, is a scope good?

I only have a scope on my one long gun. I am getting myself an ACOG next, after playing with my buddies for a bit. I still like my EOTech too though. I was considering buying a magnifier to add to it now that I am getting older and eyes are not as good. But I am not sure a 500 holo sight with a magnifier addon is really what you are after.

Another way cheaper option would be to get a small 25$ cheapo spotting scope. You can easily look at the shots after shooting. You are at an indoor range. So yes time is a factor, but is it that much of a factor that you cant look at the shots after shooting?

Chinesium aside. They get rave reviews. Some detractors out there too. But bang for buck... They are amazingly hard to beat.

If you shop sales, you can get an EOTech for just under 500, an ACOG will cost 1K+.

A next tier alternative would be the Leupold Freedom 1x34. but for something you are going to shoot 25 meters at an indoor range, why spend 250-300...

Do you need the 1MOA (Leupold) vs 2MOA (Holosun)?

At this distance, 1 vs 2 MOA in an optic is immaterial. This is a fun gun for plinking where if I can tell if I hit the target I'm happy. With irons I wouldnt know if I'm off by feet without pulling the target in closer than 20 meters.

I put an inexpensive firefield 1-4x luminated + etched reticle lvpo on my last build for my wife to test out the cool kid waters without diving into the pricey end of the pool. I'm sold. Easy breezy and intuitive. You can shoot on the 1 and then crank it up to 4 to check your work.

4x ACOG, if you can get good with the bindon aiming concept you can keep both eyes open and have the non-dominate eye bare or 1x and your dominant eye 4x. Allows for quicker target acquisition and increased awareness in cqb situations.

What's bindon aiming?

fucking look it up you retard

This is what I run on my AR: https://www.burrisoptics.com/red-dots/ar-536 On top of that I have a Burris fast fire 3 red dot. Great combo and does not break the bank. Looks cool too!

I just saw it's discontinued, Not sure if they have a replacement or not but you can still find them if you look around.
