Good breakdown article. I was always on the fence with the whole backup mag thing. Had an experience with an aggressive black bear, drew my pistol and whizzed one by his head. Mag failed with a fail to feed. I was sure as shit lucky that that was enough to scare him off. After that I saw the merit of having a spare.

You were lucky ... and lesson learned.

Yeah, that was a changing point in my self defense setup. More is better up until a point. I carry a high-cap 9mm so my thinking is "Well I got 25+1 so why do I need more?"... Now I see the light. Also opened my eyes up to why a lil' 38 special is not a bad idea, They don't jam/ftf/stovepipe.

When I first started CCing this was a internal debate as well. When I turned of age my Dad gave me a full size semi auto as a birthday present so it was the first thing I started to CC. It was a pain in the ass and as a result I started carrying less and less. Eventually I realized that a pistol is powerful a has a high capacity but you never carry because it is a pain is way worse that something smaller but you actually carry. I got a tinny little .380 and ended up carrying it everywhere. But it had such a short barrel and was so small that it was very difficult to shoot well even with frequent training. Eventually I settled in the middle with a compact 9. I think thinkness is by far more critical than HxW for concealability so I definitely recommend a single stack even though you will sacrifice some capacity. IMO a single stack and an extra mag is easier to carry than a double stack with the same capacity.

I think whatever someone is actually comfortable carrying is best for them. There is no perfect fit for everyone. And I agree with what you said. I'm just getting old and though not the most effective, my LCP does the trick for me. If I ever need it, it's there ... but in reality, I'm just looking for something that goes bang.

There is no ideal gun for every situation. The best you can do is carry best for what you expect, and count on anything that happens lining up with your prep.

I know...what a worthless answer...

As a relatively new CC'er, I feel like just my gun in my holster is large enough for everyone to see. I know in most cases it's not, but the kydex on my back is always in the back of my mind. Carrying an extra mag on my person just seems ludicrous.

I go even simpler. I merely slip a Ruger LCP .380 in any pocket. Sure, it's no monster pistol, but I do carry it and have it easily available all seasons. So there's that - LOL

7 rounds though? I borrowed one of those from a family member, and it seems very concealable... but it doesn't seem like it would be enough without several extra mags.
