Until suddenly they do. Guns are funny like that. Nobody really "needs" one until suddenly you do. And when you do, you also suddenly find that you need it very, very, badly and right now.

I imagine a "galaxy destroying hyperlaser" would be kinda like that.

If we ever discovered a nigger galaxy it would instantly be time to own lots of hyperlasers.

I prefer to err on the side of caution. The odds of there being a nigger galaxy that has achieved interstellar travel (without killing themselves off first) may be very, very, low, but it will never be zero.

Best to get started now, just to be sure.

I lied in my original comment by implying I would be against people owning galaxy destroying hyperlasers.
