They can't see what you bought only where for now. I worked at a big box outdoor retailer and you could spend thousands of dollars and not buy a single bullet. But the store could still be marked as a gun shop in the system simply because they list it that way. Places like Wal-Mart could be listed as gun shops.
There is always a possibility the box stores (Cabela's, LL Bean, Dick's, ...) could create and run an additional script at the end of each day that sorts through the UPCs of all products sold, spits out that day's gun purchases complete with any buyer info collected and entered into their system at the time of purchase and send it off to the Feds. I wouldn't put it past them with this regime. I'll stick with 2A loving mom and pop gun stores and use cash to eliminate this possibility.
There is also the possibility that all gun stores begin to self identify as sex shops.
Every purchase is already illegally run through an FBI database, prior to purchasing. You also are now forced to check with your city and obtain permission if you're considering buying.
The fucking war was lost when these 2 became "normal".
Fortunately for me, all of my gun purchases have been local private sales. Plenty of guns in my area. Very few murders.
