Greater than .22LR, .308 max. I like the ole M1 style look, not 'scary black AR'. American-made (duh). Easy to get ammo for. I really like the Ruger Scout. Also the Mini 14, but the weird safety do-hickey is a turnoff.

I prefer bolt-action over semi-auto bcuz more rugged and less problems.

I had a bolt action ruger in 22 mag that was stainless with a synthetic stock, before I lost it in the boating accident. Used almost daily to hunt all manner of varmints. You can easily and cheaply get ammo to match your prey; solid, hollow point, or shot shell. To be honest I cant ever remember cleaning it and it probably still works at the bottom of whatever body of water I lost it in.

I hadn't considered 22 mag...food for thought. I wonder about ammo availability..

pretty affordable compared to any rifle cartridge, and easy to carry 20 rounds in your pocket

I mean, can I find it in stores?
