Greater than .22LR, .308 max. I like the ole M1 style look, not 'scary black AR'. American-made (duh). Easy to get ammo for. I really like the Ruger Scout. Also the Mini 14, but the weird safety do-hickey is a turnoff.

I prefer bolt-action over semi-auto bcuz more rugged and less problems.

Further research indicates their QC went to hell the past few years

Remington went bankrupt and was sold off in pieces. And yes the last bunch of 870's were shit supposedly.

I basically had to replace every moving part in my 870 and polish the chamber to make it work properly. Complete garbage.

But I have never had an issue with a 700. You have to try pretty hard to fuck up a bolt action rifle. Not saying it can't be done - but the 700 has a pretty simple, tested design.
