Greater than .22LR, .308 max. I like the ole M1 style look, not 'scary black AR'. American-made (duh). Easy to get ammo for. I really like the Ruger Scout. Also the Mini 14, but the weird safety do-hickey is a turnoff.

I prefer bolt-action over semi-auto bcuz more rugged and less problems.

Edit: thanks for all the input, faguettes.

Remington 700 is the go-to for me. Lots of caliber options and you can replace the stock to one that fits if you don't like the factory stock.

Oddly, if you want something that's really not 'scary' looking to most people - think milsurp. Buy an actual military rifle that was used in combat... because anti-gun people don't know what they are talking about...

For levers, you're looking at Henry or one of the new Marlins (Rugers). Both are good options.

Remingtons have been shit for years. Get a Savage or Tikka. Fuck so many contenders make very very good bolt guns for cheap now. Better and cheaper. The budget guns these days are better than the old Remingtons and Winchesters. Browning makes some excellent rifles. Weatherby. Remington is NOT what it was and hasn’t been.

Didn't Remington go woke last year? I thought I was supposed to hate them now..

I second the Remington just for cost factor and ease of switching things out such as caliber. If you have a printer wou can get this new Henry print done for less than 100 bucks https://pic8.co/sh/XgD1U1.jpg

What do you mean by "switching things out such as caliber"?

[–] 1 pt (edited )

It's hard to keep track. Not sure. But they are good rifles.

[–] 1 pt

No they just went broke

Further research indicates their QC went to hell the past few years

'03 Springfield, Mauser 98k, Enfield .303; personal choice, holds 10 rds. The others hold only 5

I need to add a Springfield to the collection. That's been at the top of the list for a long time.

While 30-06, 7.92, and .303 are all harder to find, at least 30-06 is American. I like the 10 rd mag of the Enfield + a very fast cycling bolt.

Getting expensive, but a good flat shooting round.

Check out the Ruger American Rifle. Fantastic accuracy for the price.

Savage axis ıı is a cheap combo or a ruger predator also inexpensive. If you wanna spend more go Tikka. All .308 or .223

If I could only have one rifle and had some cash, it would either be a pre1964 Winchester 94 or model 70. Not cheap but both will run forever. On a budget, a used Ruger scout rifle, or a used Savage 99.

Get a lever action 30-30. Winchester Model 94

I like levers, but they are more complicated to clean...also more stuff that can jam, etc.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts (edited )

Yeah they are a bit more complicated to clean. One thing i like about them is you don't have to go off sight to reload like a bolt action. And if you get a feed failure usually just work the lever to clear it. I've got a model 94 that i inherited through my wife. It's a pretty neat gun.

I always wanted a Mauser. Growing up, a dealer had pre WW1 or later, and lots of more crazy shit. And this was in the 90s. A few years back he went nuts and took his family hostage. Shame. No one hurt though. That was a terminator level shop. Almost shot my hand with a 357 in the shooting range, trying to do a quick raise shot at 11 years old. Got some Ar, Ak, SKS, and TEC nine off him, etc. but I have a soft spot for revolvers... Then I got into playing music.

I had a bolt action ruger in 22 mag that was stainless with a synthetic stock, before I lost it in the boating accident. Used almost daily to hunt all manner of varmints. You can easily and cheaply get ammo to match your prey; solid, hollow point, or shot shell. To be honest I cant ever remember cleaning it and it probably still works at the bottom of whatever body of water I lost it in.

I hadn't considered 22 mag...food for thought. I wonder about ammo availability..

[–] 0 pt

pretty affordable compared to any rifle cartridge, and easy to carry 20 rounds in your pocket

[–] 0 pt

I mean, can I find it in stores?

[–] 1 pt

M1 garand/springfield. Iron sights do take some practice.

[–] 1 pt

Springfield 1903 or something based off of that

Bro. Just get an AK. Zastava or WASR. Rugged and problem free. Can do it all. Great for hunting. No issues there. Chf-cl barrel will last 30k+ rds. Indestructible. Reliable. And badass. There are amazing upgrades for them now. Mine is quite accurate and runs hard. You do not have to baby these guns.

Don’t spend a lot on a bolt gun. The budget bolt guns are quite good these days. Tikka and Savage are gtg.

But if you have to have only one gun and are not set on long range shooting. Just get a solid AK. They are the most fun and most versatile gun ever.

AK-47: If I absolutely, positively, GOT to kill EVERY muthafuckka in the room...accept no substitute.

[–] 1 pt

Or the woods.

Good for people, hogs, deer and bear. Cheap af hollow and soft points. Heavy as fuck subsonics at cheap price. Decent higher quality hunting ammo if you want it. But the bulk shit works great. A few hundo you can have a case of hunting ammo for life. Can just easily swap optic rails, muzzle devices and ammo for that shogun-like versatility. One AK can swap shit in a minute for total different purposes. Great hunting gun. 7.62x39 fucking rapes deer and bear with the right projectile at normal hunting ranges.

And that shit just fucking runs. Malfunction? Pull handle. Malfunction again? Change mag, pull handle. That’s it. Don’t even have to break cheek weld to charge. I didn’t clean mine for YEARS. Hosed it out. Wiped with rag. Ran a shoelace with motor Oil through the barrel. Rubbed motorcycle oil on all the metal parts. Gtg for another couple of years lol.
