It doesn’t have anything to do with odds. It has to do with protection and self-preservation. Odds are in my favor that someone isn’t going to break into my car but I lock it anyway for the one time that someone tries. Many people have used a gun they were carrying to save themselves or others.

But actually, in some scenarios, odds do come in to play. For example, concealed carry in the UK or Singapore. Would the immense odds that you'd never have to use it come in to play? Surely. But then one could make the case that if a knife is pulled on you, you have every right to shoot.

Good point, about the fact that carrying has helped others. And your other point. A locked gate keeps an honest man honest.
