Detect? Don't get wrapped around the purely American idea that everything requires technical means (satellites, etc.) to find something. You are aware that most intel comes from informants, right? All it takes is one guy. Have you ever seen a mobile home? How about a shack out in the woods? That's what your average meth lab looks like.

Have you ever seen a clearing in the forest next to a river? Because that's exactly what a "submarine construction" facility looks like. Nothing there on Monday. Tuesday a bunch of trucks show up. Wednesday they build a wood and fiberglass "sub". And by Thursday it's just a clearing again.

it's not a competition bro, I'm just hypothesising about why they don't just make their own weapons given that they have the capital to do so. Iran and NK make their own missiles for no other reason than leverage

FWIW, they are made in warehouses and boatyards, I've found a picture of an early one under a tarp so that could be anywhere, now they are huge $1M uboats.

Retired 18Z/ 18F. Got over 20 years seeing and figuring out what, when, where, how and why bad guys are gonna do bad things. I've stood in the remains of coke factories in the jungle in Columbia and heroin production compounds in Helmand province Afghanistan. So I'm not just talking out of my hat when I tell you the "why's" and "how's". I've seen it.

For twenty years the taliban were getting their weapons, explosives and other supplies from Iran, Pakistan and China, even though they had the money to produce their own. Why? Because they knew damned good and well that the us.gov was never, ever going to bomb Iran, Pakistan and China.
