Kinda surprising to me, though. Insurance premiums are set by risk, so I would expect the membership fee for these services to increase for people living in 2nd Amendment hostile areas.
Statistically legal gun owners are the safest, least criminal citizens. Compared to the number of gun owners there are actually very few defensive uses of force. The per capita numbers are tiny. The price IS tied to the risk and the risk is low.
...And about California... even though they have lot's of gun control, lawyers cost just as much in NY or DC etc. The sad truth is that If you shoot someone in self defence you WILL end up in court no matter what state you are in. Even if you do not get charged criminally the family will sue you and you will have to listen to a sob story from the mom. "He was a good boy. <sob> He just got a job and was turning his life around. <sob> He dinnu nuffin <sob>"
