I think it's a great choice for self-defense. It's reliable and it hits hard. If it were me, I'd use .38 rounds for range practice, and load it with .357 rounds for concealed carry. This main thing about this gun is that is isn't going to fail on you when you need it. Semi-autos lock up all the time. They are unreliable. Revolvers almost never malfunction, no matter how badly they are neglected or abused, and Smith & Wesson are quality guns. It will be there when you need it. Five rounds are enough. Only an idiot or a nigger sprays bullets.
Strap a brick to your chest, and carry that around for a few days to get used to it
I don't think so. I'm in a wheelchair thanks to the Tet Offensive and me being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and it's motorized courtesy of the VA. I could almost mount a 5.56mm rotary cannon on it since I've got a lot of battery power. Need a swivel mount though. Semper Fi, by the way.
Huuummm now got me thinking about maybe an optical headsup display on my trifocals, so I can just look at a bunch of niggers or gangbangers and .... ahhh, never mind .. wouldn't even think about something like that, no sir!
Might as well go big with a GAU-19 https://www.gd-ots.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/GAU-19-B_50CAL_image.jpg
But have you priced linked .50 cal ammo lately? If I had that kind of money I would just hire some triggers to sweep the terrain ahead and behind me.
To me, the biggest issue is only 5 shots.
It will be heavier than a polymer 9mm pistol with less than half the rounds.
I dunno why you'd want to carry a revolver, but if you're set on that, you may want to consider something with an enclosed hammer.
I carry the S&W Model 60. It's definitely a reliable gun and the size makes it perfect for pocket-carry. During the summer, I keep it my front pocket and in the winter it fits perfectly in a coat pocket (in the chest when driving or in a "belly" pocket).
Given the short barrel, people tend to the think the .357 magnum is going to be unwieldy when you fire and if you're going to wheel-dump, you're going to get some target-drift, but what I've found at the range is that the kick isn't really distinguishable between the .357 and .38 special; that said, I really don't bother with .38 special.
I carry an SP101 loaded with 357 hollow points.
