Because, with my Taurus Judge, I have killed 2 large rattlesnakes and one copperhead in the past year. I also managed a copperhead kill (headshot) with a 1911 .45, but I had plenty of time to set up the shot.
In a hurry when you need to kill the damn snake before it gets away or bites a .410 field shot shell works wonders. If you don't have the same need just don't buy one.
Edit: You can also get .410 Personal Protection Rounds with BBs and copper discs that are great for up-close A-grade personal carnage.
Or you can get snake loads for normal guns. I carry cci snake loads for my .357. Works just fine, and no obnoxious overlong cylinder needed.
Nothing wrong with a dedicated snake gun. Fits well in the lock box in my vehicle and is always with me and I don't have to go swapping ammo and inviting the possibility that I'd need my "normal gun" and find that it's got the wrong ammo in it.
