It wasn't all that long ago. We could bring guns to school in the late 70's early 80's, and most boys did. Had to be unloaded and in a case, and kept in your locker. A lot of kids took Gun Safety through the school, but I took it at a private gun club because my birthday would have meant waiting for the next school season and I wanted my permit ASAP. I did shoot skeet at school though, and brought guns because of hunting before and after school as well. It was normal and nobody ever got shot.

Mid 60s small town northern CA, 7th and 8th grade we took or .22 rifles to school some days. And after school 6 or 7 of us would walk down the street out town to shoot rabbits in the alfalfa fields.

In the seventies I had friends who drove pickups with gun racks, nobody thought anything of it.

Truth be told, a lot of those students from last century would protest gun violence also. The difference is that in the last century the students had enough sense to understand that the guns themselves are Not the problem! Those students were not so stupid as to believe that the guns cause the violence. They knew that the violence was caused by the People using the weapons! And anything could be used as a weapon!

We still had high school gun clubs / ranges in 2003, when I graduated, in Anchorage AK. Not sure if that's still the case. Been years since I left.
