CA has already banned standard capacity mags but pre-ban mags are grandfathered in. This new law would have made the pre-ban mags illegal also.

My take on this was that they did not want the case to be appealed to the supreme court because they fear a loss there would overturn mag cap laws nation wide. The lower court's ruling was very limited and only effected the new law. They fear the supreme court would make a much more general ruling against magazine capacity bans. For them it is better to take a loss in CA where standard cap mags are already illegal and this ruling only prevents them from confiscating mags that have been in state since the '90s. This is a minor loss in CA but would have been a major loss at the national level.

This is the new normal with the recent shifts in the supreme court. I think you will see the gun grabbers avoiding the supreme court at all cost.

Excellent point. I think you've pretty much hit the nail on the head. And I can't disagree, the left will be much more leery about what they attempt to move to the top.
