I was owner of an AN/SPS-40E long range air search RADAR. There should be zero chance of mistaken identity with our own planes, they're all equipped with IFF beacons.

TBH, I wasn't in ops and I don't know how long it takes for IFF data to display, though I always saw it always on so my assumption was instantaneous, but, maybe there's some chance they wouldn't know. I just find it incredibly hard to believe. Between AEGIS, traditional RADAR, battlegroup and flight deck comms, that we could fire on assets from the same carrier group...seems impossible.

My first thought was of the Liberty. Jews shot us, now we cover it up.

Anyone more familiar with the user-end of a military RADAR?
