The bulk of Taiwanese civilians actually want the mainland to take over.

I'm curious to what you base that view on. I've dealt with quite a few low ranking Taiwanese people through my work and they don't seem to have a favorable view of China. Many of them travel to China somewhat regularly and hate much about the culture and infrastructure within China. I've dealt with them enough to know the popular web sites and how to work the translators. Additionally, I used to have VPN access through my work so I could access sites restricted to Taiwanese people and mainland propaganda sites directed at the Taiwanese. I never got the impression they wanted the mainland to takeover.

China's aggression has certainly amped up since then and maybe the younger generation would rather live under CCP oppression than die fighting it. The few older people I interacted with did have a much more "live free or die" mentality than the younger ones.
