That's been the case for quite some time. I would guess Google does it to give themselves an alibi, that is "Look, we help fund the competition, we can't be a monopoly."

That’s exactly why they do it; couple hundred million here or there to the “competition” is probably a lot cheaper and more productive than massive anti-trust lawsuits.

Only a small part of the money goes into the Firefox development, most is used for the management and social justice projects. They are paid to let Firefox die, and the deplatforming talk is a (very successful) method to accelerate the death.
