There was a study that put groups of people on a low fat and the other on a low sugar diet. They both lost weight with the low fat group winning by an insignificant amount. Your body can store fat as fat just like it can turn sugar into fat and store it too. Fat does more to make you feel full, and doesn't have the addictive effect that sugar has.
I will say for me personally , sugar puts weight on me in record time.
I believe it's specifically fructose that is causing this problem or anything that contains fructose (white sugar, HFCS, fruit juices, etc.). Your body cannot burn fructose and has to convert it. It almost always gets converted into fat since the other options involve not having glucose. Fructose is typically consumed with plenty of glucose to go with it. People of the past used to eat a lot of starch (bundled up glucose) and were not turning out a bunch of lard asses everywhere.
