I'm not an expert, but I traveled around SE Asia for a year or so after college.

what she's experiencing is a difference in culture. not just the fact she's fatter than the majority of Asians, there are clearly some fat ones. They've seen that before.

the difference is how in western culture we tend to "not say something if it isn't nice" even to the point of lying; "no you don't look fat at all."

in at least some of the Asian cultures I've experienced they say things that are direct and obviously true and don't think about it as offensive, it's just the way they observe and state things. they don't really overly process the feelings of the receiver and aren't trying to be mean the majority of the time, they just observe and state what they see. if you are fat they will say just that. if you have a scar on your face they may point that out. i'm sure there is some type of anthropological word for it, but i don't have it.

I'm not saying it's good or bad, just saying it's a difference in culture. but that's not gonna stop a professional victim from trying to get those sweet sweet oppression points.
