You know, that's an interesting point. I'll have to ask one of my Japanese colleagues about how sumo is a thing thoug they opemly dislike fat people.
I can say from my time in Japan that while the higher level rikishi are celebrated and somewhat of celebrities, lower levels are sort fo looked down upon.
