I'm fit. I can go get food (hunt, gather, forage) easily. The fatty can't and when they lose their fat they aren't suddenly fit.
While the lard barge could last up to a year converting their fat stores to energy, they won't live that long without vitamins. Their entire bodies are inflamed and their organs damaged from years of eating foods devoid of proper nutrition. Either their liver or their heart will go before they lose enough weight to start surviving on their own.
