I find that term "greedy guts" is what normally applies. It is the childish notion that if you do not eat the food someone else will, and then they win.
Can confirm. Knew a fat in college who had "food anxiety." Of course it wasn't her fault. It was because her parents didn't feed her enough, so she had to eat everything in sight just to make sure everyone else didn't eat it. I suspect she ate everything and parents wouldn't run out and buy more food.
I actually knew a guy like that. He never called it "food anxiety" or any nonsense like that. He truly wasn't fed enough and his "family" didn't provide enough. He was at a healthy weight when I knew him though. Maybe even a bit underweight.
I remember he was at my house and stayed for dinner. My dad watched him in awe as he ate 14 chicken drumsticks. I was used to it but my point is, he was conditioned to eat as much as he could whenever food was available. It was really kind of sad.

You have to pick one, and only one.
I cant help but think you are correct. Lots of good info posted but I think you might have hit the cynical nail on the head.
That and a bunch of other things like anxiety over wasting food and comfort eating.
