Are they the source of this allegation or are the police (with the article just parroting what was told to them) or another person?
Police said they were aware of online posts linked to the suspect, whose name has not been released. About two hours before the attack, a post appeared on 8chan, the message board that had hosted the anti-immigrant manifesto of the man accused of the El Paso shooting. The post raised questions of whether it could have been written by the shooting suspect.
NYT is saying that the post raised questions which indicates that they may have "read" the post, as implied in the previous sentence. What kind of drugs are they on, if interpreted this way ?
Or did the police or another person tell them the contents of the post or similar that caused the sentences to be written ?
The author appears to be a free lance journalist. Making shit up just to make $$$ is another, and most likely, reason. Since there is no way to discover the truth, I'll go with the OP's view and agree its totally made up shit while noting a thin sliver of possibility the author just quoted another idiot.
