That's a common reaction I think. Evangelion's one of the only anime I have ever watched, and that was a year ago so I'm no big lifelong fanboy of the genre. Evangelion makes some pretty pointed commentary on the human condition and the difficulty of just living and having relationships. This isn't something I wrote but it's fairly good to remember, since the series doesn't hammer it into you: >**SHINJI IKARI:** Saw his mother get absorbed into a giant robot when he was three years old. Had his own father abandon him and was forced to live with his grade school teacher for over ten years. Now has to pilot said robot against extraterrestrial beings that look like they came out of a H.P. Lovecraft. Feels the excruciating pain that the robot feels. Tries to do the right thing but everyone yells at him. Works with a emotionless girl with a better relationship with his father than he, a German with a inferiority complex and an alcoholic who has daddy issues of her own and is also a pedophile.
