Just a quick review of the action:

So the green movement in Europe wanted to shut down all the nuclear reactors, and stop burning fossil fuel, while investing in green energy and relying on natural gas to fill any energy shortfalls.

So they did all that..

Turns out, green energy this year isn't going to meet the demand, so they need to fire up the natural gas to make up the difference.

Problem is, they didn't buy enough natural gas back when it was cheap. Much of Europe's natural gas comes from Russia, and there's lots of anti Russian EU types who don't want to give Putin any help. It is fair to say a good number of these same people were at the very least supportive of the overthrow of Ukraine's pro Russia government back in 2013.

So, anyways, for a long time Ukraine has been dependent on Russian natural gas for energy in the wintertime. That gas comes from a big pipeline that also carries on into Germany. Under the pro Russia Ukraine, the Ukrainians would pay for part of the gas they used, and, claiming poverty, get Russia to donate the rest. Under the Pro EU Ukraine, Ukraine still partly pays Russia, and just steals the rest.

It's not like Russia has any choice. Not if they want to meet their commercial gas contractual obligations with Germany.

Seeing the writing on the wall, Russia moved to build two new pipelines to Europe, a Northern route and a Southern route. With these new pipelines Russia can now cut off the Ukraine entirely if they wish. At the very least, Russia can now force the Ukraine to pay full price for all the gas they use.

So, the Northern route was finished just a few weeks ago, and is waiting approval to start shipping gas to Europe through the shiny new pipeline. The anti-Russian faction of the EU is refusing to give Russia the approvals.

Now, another factor comes into play. Europe's energy markets have been converted over to Enron style spot price markets, where energy is bought and sold on an open market trading system. Russia offered to sign long term energy contracts back in the summer when prices were cheaper, with few takers. So, comes the fall and we have natural gas inventories in Europe that are not ready for a full winter. Meanwhile, Russia is only delivering gas based on existing contracts and not a liter more.

This has caused the price of natural gas in Europe to skyrocket. Also, since so much of the electricity grid is now backed by natural gas, the gas price increases have led to electricity price increases at the same time. It's a double whammy. Furthermore, Russia has said they are not sending any new gas through the Ukraine pipeline, or any other pipeline. While Russia will meet their existing contracts, they are only signing new contracts if the gas itself is shipped through the yet to be approved northern route.

Putin either gets his way, aka, a viable northern route, or Europe freezes this winter, and then starves next year. Otherwise, to avoid starvation, Europe will have to import gas by ship which costs an absolute fortune.

Meanwhile, if Europe remains adamant about not buying from Russia anymore, Russia is also building new pipelines to China, who are very eager to buy all the oil and gas that Russia can sell them. China doesn't care about green energy.

And the Ukraine? Putin is going to fuck the Ukraine in the ass when he just turns off their gas until they pay their unpaid bills.

Just like every other gas company in the world.
