This article is pretty asinine. Development of fission based energy also required a very large expenditure from both industry and government, but over time the initial R&D expense became relatively inconsequential. If development of fusion based energy generation is successful, no one will give a thought to the cost of development in 50 years. They will be too busy refining designs to increase efficiency.
