They say there's so much stuff on there that it would be effectively impossible for any one person to preserve it. Not that anybody would want to since most of it is probably useless crap.

I would imagine if everybody from our corner of the internet went at it individually, there would be a lot of overlap/redundant downloads. Wasted bandwidth and man hours.

Would it make sense to arrange a coordinated approach as a group? Have one guy get as much as he can from Topic A, another from Topic B, etc and then figure out how to exchange data afterwards so everybody has a complete collection?

It would require trust that whoever is in charge of Topic N doesn't fuck it up for everybody else. Maybe do a series of smaller exchanges so you can weed out the flakes early on.
