I recently ran a test where I dug out a iPad (2nd gen) and an iPad Air (1st gen) both running very old versions of iOS and despite the 2nd gen iPad's age, it's battery has lasted over 2 months on airplane mode (with no usage) while the iPad Air lasted one month on airplane mode (with very minimal usage).

indeed, but it also shows they weren't doing as much slowing down in those iOS versions. they still run very snappy.
