A store I was in recently runs cables with locks through all the clothing on the racks.

This is not at all comparable to having to scan your ID at a machine in order to buy something.

Maybe not, but that is precisely what it is for. I guarantee you they had asswhipes running out the door with a case of beer in both hands and this is how they stopped it. Does it suck? Sure it does, but this is where society is going.
