This is definitely to cut down on the thievery. A store I was in recently runs cables with locks through all the clothing on the racks. They are not trying to take away my freedom, they are trying to keep their product from being stolen by the armload.
I get what you are saying. But regardless of what you think it's doing it's still tracking you, which is a restriction on your freedoms.

This is not at all comparable to having to scan your ID at a machine in order to buy something.
Maybe not, but that is precisely what it is for. I guarantee you they had asswhipes running out the door with a case of beer in both hands and this is how they stopped it. Does it suck? Sure it does, but this is where society is going.
