Where I am there is so many few years old 2nd hand hybrid and electrics on the market that anyone with half a brain would be able to realize they are crap.
I was listening to an MSM radio some time ago and there was an "electric car expert" (and a woman lol) explaining how they are much better than normal cars. There was so many people that own el cars calling in and complaining that they had to cut the show short.
Hybrids are the best imho, if you are inclined to go that route. Max torque at zero rpm is great, it works for locomotives really well.

Do you know if there are hybrids where you can manually choose when to switch to electric?
Yes, but those are the mclarin and Porsche where the electric is there to make it go faster, rather than the main powerplant.
The Toyota hybrids and the like autoselect , at least the ones I've seen.
A locomotive is 100% electric motor, and the diesel engine is an ac generator.
