A very simple trick to get around this is to simply hook a cheap non smart thermostat in parallel with the nest and set the air conditioner temperature one degree higher than you normally prefer. This way, you get the benefit of the cheaper power and you can still use the Nest's remote functionality. Personally, I won't use any "smart" device at my home.
