How expensive does drug development need to be really? Most of the efforts go towards satisfying regulators and angling for patent monopolies.
The image we're supposed to have is hordes of hard working persons of colour using priceless equipment to make discoveries no SME could ever afford to, then they get a few short years of profits before it becomes free to the public. I suspect that an honest assessment would show hordes of jewish lawyers working hard to place new drugs under intellectual monopoly, then either ban the alternatives or monopolise them too.
