I heard the sinking of the Titanic was actually an insurance scam. It's sister ship the Olympic had been involved in a collision with a naval ship and since they didn't have enough money to repair it they patched it up to make it look like the Titanic, took out an insurance policy in it, then rammed it into the iceberg and sunk it so that they could cash in on their insurance policy before the ship fell apart and sank on it's own because of the damage that hadn't been repaired from the previous collision.
